Starter safety button problem

Post by Cefn coch »

I have just purchased a 1954 Tef .The problem is that the starter safety button seems to be stuck in the start position and will not return to the safety position when the engine starts. I can’t see anyway this can be withdrawn for cleaning etc. of course this allows the engine to be started but being stuck in gives no protection against accidentally selecting the starting position accidentally when changing gear.Any help would be greatly appreciated

The first thing that I would try, is spray round the button with some penetrating oil then with some pliers try pulling the button out and in to see if it frees off. You may have to let it soak overnight depending how tight it is.

Thank you Sandy for your advice. I gave it a good soaking with WD40 overnight,it is so tight it has to be taped in with a hide mallet and of course won’t return without easing out with a suitable lever it is that tight.
Does anyone know if and how if it needs to be replaced.
Secondly how dangerous is it for it to remain in the “on” position which is necessary now to start the tractor

Sandy, after several days soaking the switch with WD40 it has done the trick. I went to it today to apply another dose but to my delight the button goes in easily perhaps more important it returns quite easily.
So thank you again for taking the time to help.
