My TEF Restoration

Post by T20Bigjim »

Bought this TEF as a wreck over lockdown. I already had a TED and TEA but after finding the father in law a TEF for his 70th birthday i felt i needed one ;)

The back axle was from an early petrol model. No casting date was found. So they had welded a makeshit battery tray to each trumpet :o

First thing was to remove the engine and rebuild it while sourcing a back axle.

Unfortunatly when i was undoing various bits it became apparent that the gearbox casting was in poor condition with a chunk picking off with my fingers!

So engine was removed and the stripping began. I removed the gearbox from the old back end to find a horrendous amount of sludge and cunk in the bottom. Thankfully a friend had a back axle and a gearbox was found locally!

Next step while waiting for the crank to be ground was to finish off the steering box and column. New bearings in the column and seals in the steering box should see me out! 8-)

Finally the crank was back from being ground and i managed to get the bottom end built and timing chain on and all timed up. I then did the gearbox input seal and a new thrust bearing before refititng the flywheel with a new clutch driven plate.

The injection pump was fun to do. Thankfully youtube plus my father in law helped as he had done his a few weeks prior. One of the filter cover bolts refused to come out so a nut was welded to the head!

Front axle carrier was cleaned up and painted with some red oixde. I also cleaned up the front of the engine and primed that too before the carrier was fitted.

Managed to source a mil loader fairly locally. I have a spare set of brackets etc too so my TED which had a mill loader on when it was on its original farm will have a set of brackets fitted to it aswell as this TEF. Then i can use the loader on which ever tractor i need! :D
I was surprised how good the bucket was!
