Ferguson TED20 - Mower advice

Post by JonK »

Hello all,

I'm a very new owner to a lovely Ferguson TED20, which I bought to do the odd road run, plus mow a small paddock we own.

I'm after some advice on what type of mower would be ideal to use behind the tractor. The paddock is circa 1 acre, and slopes gently. It's mainly grass, with a few nettles, dock leaves etc. I wondered whether a topper, or small flail mower would work.

Any advice and recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jon

Hi,
Firstly you need to be aware that you may or may not have a standard pto stub shaft. Adaptors are available.
Obviously the diehard would suggest a Ferguson fingerbar mower. Designed for the tractor, and with a bit of practice setting it up makes a nice job. But, they're not great on short grass as they can tend to push it over before cutting. Work fairly well on longer crop but leave the cut grass in a swath.
A vertical shaft 'swipe' will leave the cut grass in a row, and possibly leave wheel marks as the tractor has run over the uncut grass first. Similar situation with a flail with wheel marks, but a flail will mulch to a degree, also good at firing stones at the operator.
Most important to consider with those, a swipe or flail will have a dynamic momentum which means as a grey has a single plate clutch, when you nose up to a fence or similar and dip the clutch the mower rotor will act as a flywheel and keep you going forward. Not ideal.
Another option would be a small trailed land drive gang mower, but there is a lot of maintenance issues with those.

My ideal answer? If you do road runs you may have a transport box. Use that to bring in half a dozen sheep then sit back and watch them mow the grass for you. :D
What could possibly go wrong?

Hello,

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated. Afraid sheep are not an option, but thanks for the suggestion.

I've done some more research - It appears as long as I get a PTO overrun clutch adapter, a TE20 is fine with a small topper or flail (I've watched plenty of YouTube videos showing them being operated). I've moving towards a 3ft Fleming topper, which seems to fit the bill and is well within the TE20's capabilities.

If anyone else has any advice, it'd be much appreciated.

Jon
